Cephs & Cooks with Edel Sheerin on the Irish Angler Fish and Megrim Survey (IAMS) 2019

I am Edel Sheerin and I am a researcher on the Cephs and Cooks Mission (Interreg) on the Nationwide College of Eire, Galway led by Dr Anne Marie Energy . This multi-disciplinary venture consisting of 14 companions in whole, unfold throughout the EU combines fisheries science, socio-economics, gastronomy and advertising with the goal of growing sustainable cephalopod (squid, octopus & cuttlefish) fisheries within the Atlantic Space (France, Eire, Portugal, Spain, U.Ok.).

My function inside this venture is to evaluate the species presently caught in Irish waters utilizing DNA barcoding strategies and assess the genetic variety of key business species by inhabitants genetics, to tell inventory assessments. I used to be lucky sufficient to be chosen to participate within the SMART Coaching By means of Analysis Scheme (TTRS) for the primary leg of the annual IAMS (Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey) 2019. The general goal of IAMS is to gather knowledge for Anglerfish Lophius piscatorius and L. budegassa) and Megrim (Lepidorhombus whiffiaginis and L. boscii) in  ICES rectangles, 6a and seven inside the North Atlantic, with a purpose to generate biomass estimates and abundance indices for monkfish and megrim.  Biometrics knowledge comparable to size, weight, intercourse and maturity can also be recorded for different species of business curiosity.

Collaborating on this survey not solely allowed me to achieve a deeper understanding of fisheries analysis, but additionally gave me the chance to gather important cephalopod knowledge for Cephs & Cooks. The survey befell over three legs and I used to be positioned on Leg 1 from the first to the thirteenth of March 2019 on the contintental shelf and edge west of Eire.

The IAMS survey operates 24 hours per day with 1-hour tows, reaching depths of as much as >1200M. Cut up into two 12 hour shifts, every crew of scientists works effectively to course of every haul. Complete catch weights and organic knowledge (size, weight, intercourse and maturity) are recorded for every tow.  Sure species require otolith (calcareous deposits permit scientists to age the people) elimination, e.g. Megrim, Hake, while the Monkfish require the illicia to be eliminated. That is utilized by the monkfish as a lure to draw prey.

Despite some very poor climate circumstances which interrupted the survey, we processed 40 hauls throughout the leg, together with a number of deep water stations on the continental shelf positioned simply north west of Belmullet. The spotlight of the survey for me was experiencing the deep water hauls, it was superb to see all of surprising species who inhabit these depths and such a distinction to the species we caught throughout the extra shallow water hauls. Seeing first-hand the variations to reside in such circumstances was fascinating e.g. Chimaera monstrosa with sensory organs that detect electromagnetic fields to assist them discover prey within the deep sea (Figures 1 & 2).  Different species we collected knowledge on included  alfonsino and silver roughy  (Determine 3), black scabbardfish (Determine 4), and 6 gilled shark (Determine 5).

Alongside the present cephalopod knowledge routinely recorded by the MI scientists (whole catch weights) I collected tissue samples for DNA Evaluation, additionally taking statoliths and intercourse and maturity knowledge to reinforce the data base. Statoliths are calcareous deposits, much like otoliths in fish, which we are able to use to age cephalopods.

The principle cephalopod species caught had been Todaropsis eblanae, and Illex coindetti (Determine 6) with the vast majority of people recorded as both maturing or mature.

Our crew at NUIG will assess the cephalopod fisheries’ standing and sustainability throughout the Northeast Atlantic utilizing a mixture of Laptop Modelling and DNA evaluation strategies (Barcoding and Microsatellite Evaluation).

Determine 1. Rabbitfish, Chimaera montrosa on Leg 1 of IAMS
Determine 2. Electromagnetic sensors on Chimaera montrosa
Determine 3: Alfonsino (Beryx decadactylus) and silver roughy (Hoplostethus mediterraneus)
Determine 4: Black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo)

Determine 5.Six gilled shark (Hexanchus griseus) measuring 212 cm lengthy and weighing 58 Kg
Determine 6: Shut up picture of contained in the mantle cavity of a mature feminine Illex coindetti specimen. Key options embrace nicely developed ovary filling the posterior cavity, containing a number of oocytes and nicely developed opaque nidamental glands, these glands are concerned in egg secretion.
I completely loved this expertise, having gained invaluable data and expertise which I’ll take with me as I pursue my profession in Marine Science. Many because of everybody concerned:  John Boyd at SMART Sea College, Dr. Eoghan Kelly and Dr Leonie O’Dowd at Fishery Ecosytem Advisory Providers on the Marine Institute and the captain, crew and scientists of the R.V. Celtic Explorer for making it a unbelievable expertise!
