Earth from Area – Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, Germany


A part of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, often known as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in northeast Germany is featured on this picture captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.

From the south, it’s fed by a number of arms of the Oder River, Poland’s second-longest river, and several other smaller rivers. The distinct line throughout the lagoon depicts the transport waterway that connects the port cities of Świnoujście and Szczecin.

A number of emerald-green algae blooms may be seen within the picture, with essentially the most seen close to Peenestrom, an arm of the Baltic Sea, within the left of the picture. Peenestrom separates the island of Usedom from the mainland and is a crucial habitat for waterfowl, particularly due to its fish inhabitants, resembling white-tailed eagles and herons.

The Baltic Sea is not any stranger to algae blooms, with two annual blooms happening annually (the spring bloom and the cyanobacterial bloom in late spring.) Given this picture was captured in February, it’s more than likely an onset of a spring bloom.
